This   comes   to   y^«u  as  a  forerunner,  and,  as  must  be,  there  are 

inajjy  errors  and  omissions.     It  is  my  wish   that  any   found   by   you    will   be

Alexander  Maclionald  oi  the  Isles,  to  Lillier  Alex.nuler,  our  maternal  ancestor. 
Alex.inder  Machonald  made  war  upon  the  kini;s  ol  Scotland,  and  was  banished 
about  1472;  thus  his  s«m,  Alexander,  lost  his  surname  anil  was  known  as 
Alex  Alexander,  the  liist  Maron  ol  Menslril.  HW.  "The  Standard"  «  I  July  21,

As  to  our  Ancestors'  record  in  the  Kevolutionary  War,  we  have  in>t  taken 

sieps  to  prove  our  claims;   yet  we  know,  to  our  own  satislaction.   thai  William 

.Austin   of    Auvrusta   ("ounty,   Virninia.   was  a  (laptain,  and  that  Uie  two  John 

.Thomsons  served,  one  as  Second  Lieutenant  in  the  Tirst  Virginia,  the   other   .is 

Secoiul  Lieutenant  in  the  Seventh  Virginia. 

Ol  the  Austin  branch  o|  ilie  lamily  little  has  been  louiiil  lurlher  than  the 

■name   stands    on    the    pa^es  ol  the  l:nv;lish  "hoomsday  lio'-k"  as  beloni;inn  to 

one  ol  those  who  came  into  Lnv;land  with  William  the  CiiKineror.      The  name 

multiplies  in  Saxon,  Norman,  linnlaiul,  and  some  went  into  Wales,  while  others 

fiuind  homes  iniieiinany.     Ol  the  ancestry  back  ol  William  and  Moses    Austin

son,    William,  was  "a  very  fat  man."    lie  left  four  sons:

Arcl)ibald  Ah'xander,  born  in  Ireland,  nianor  of  Ciinning* 
ham,  February, 4;  i/O^S,  emigrated  to  Pennsylvania  in  1737,  and 
from  Pennsylvania  10  then  ^ugusta;  (now'  Kockbridgc)  county, 
\'a.,  in  1747.  He  married  hrst  in  Ireland,  on  the  31st  of  De- 
cember 1734,  his  first  coiuin  Margaret  Parks.  '^Shc  was  of  niid- 
<lling  stature  and  rather  inclined  to  be  loan,  witli  light  hair  and 
llorid  countenance;  she  was  very  pious."     Their  children   were: 

I.      Ebzabetli,  born  October  2H,  1735,  in  Ireland.

graduate  of  the  University  of  Dublin,  and  taught  the  first  clas*  • 

sical  school  west  of  the  mountains  of  Virginia,  of  which    school  i 

the  present  Washington  &  Lee  University  is  the    lineal    descen*  « 

dant.     This  Robert  had  a  son  Robert;  his  children  were:  |^
